My life has certainly been unpredictable. From opening my own business after getting laid off during a recession… to buying the 1800s farmhouse of my dreams on a whim… to getting that terrible 3 a.m. phone call that I’d lost a family member in a car accident…

I know we can’t be prepared for everything.

But it’s important to make sure these surprises don’t leave us helpless.

Never in a million years did I think I’d be a lawyer.

I went to college to be a social worker because I truly wanted to make the world a better place.

But I quickly learned that I hated social work. It was physically and emotionally exhausting, and I was being paid next to nothing to be a paper-pusher.

After some soul searching, I decided to switch careers. All while working full-time for law firms to gain experience, I completed law school in 2008.

Then came the biggest plot twist of all: I was laid off right after I passed the bar – during the height of the recession.

I decided to open my own business and built my firm from nothing. I’m proud to say we’ve seen growth every single year and didn’t reduce anyone’s pay or hours during the pandemic.

My personal life has been full of surprises, too.

I met my husband in the Taco Bell drive-through line when we were 18. We’ve been married for more than 20 years and now have three wonderful daughters.

In 2017, we decided to look at an 1800s farmhouse on a whim and ended up putting an offer in later that week.

But there have been painful surprises, too.

Not long after I started law school, I received a call in the middle of the night about a terrible car accident – one family member had died, and my aunt was in critical condition.

Our family was tossed into chaos. Who would make decisions for my aunt? What would she want if she could fully communicate? Would she want to sue the person who caused the accident? Who should find the right attorney to represent her?

The loss of a loved one is never easy.

But having a document that answers those questions can ease the friction for an already-grieving family.

And that’s part of the reason I love what I do.

I love helping families iron out the details so they can avoid those added stressors.

I love taking that burden from people and being able to tell them they can put their mind at ease.

It might sound crazy, but I actually look forward to Mondays, and I have zero desire to retire.

I love working with good people and genuinely enjoy helping them prepare for the future.

Because those little unpredictable moments in life can make or break us. And preparing for them is the best way to strengthen the foundation for our families’ futures.
